Frequently
Asked
Questions
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. It emphasises core strength, control, and body awareness.
Do I need any prior experience to attend a Pilates class?
For Beginner & Mixed Level classes, no prior experience is necessary. The instructor will talk you through all the exercises thoroughly and provide reminders and cues throughout each exercise to keep you performing the exercise correctly. The classes are also ‘hands on’ meaning the instructor may help you to physically find the correct placement /alignment of the body through hands on adjustments. If this is not something you are comfortable with, please do let the instructor know and they can talk you through these adjustments instead. For intermediate & advanced classes, a deeper understanding of the Pilates principles is required.
What should I wear to a Pilates class?
Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid extra loose clothing, as it may get in the way during exercises. Many people prefer wearing leggings or fitted pants and a tank top or T-shirt. We will practice in bare feet or socks.
What equipment do I need for a Pilates class?
For classes based within the Pilates Guru studio, Newton Aycliffe, no equipment is required. For all other classes you will be required to bring your own Pilates mat. You may also bring along any other Pilates equipment you have that you feel may benefit you (e.g. a cushion for extra padding under the knees or wrist/ankle weights to increase the intensity of exercises).
How often should I attend Pilates classes?
The frequency depends on your personal fitness goals. Most people benefit from attending Pilates 2–3 times per week. Consistency is key to seeing improvement in flexibility, strength, and posture.
Is Pilates a good workout for weight loss?
While Pilates isn't primarily focused on cardiovascular exercise or burning a lot of calories, it can contribute to weight loss as part of a well-rounded fitness routine. It tones muscles, improves posture, and can boost metabolism. If you are looking for weight loss specifically, the ‘Power Pilates’ class would be of most benefit due to the higher intensity exercises being incorporated.
Can Pilates help with back pain?
Yes, Pilates is often recommended for people with back pain as it strengthens the core, stabilising muscles and improves posture, which can help alleviate strain on the back. However, if you have a specific injury, consult with a doctor before starting any exercise routine and please contact me specifically before booking.
What is the difference between Pilates mat and reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates is performed on the floor using only a mat and bodyweight exercises (however we do also include different equipment in some classes). Reformer Pilates uses a specialised machine called the reformer, which provides resistance through springs and pulleys, offering a greater variety of exercises and more intensity. Reformer classes can also be booked at the Pilates Guru studio, Newton Aycliffe.
How long does a typical Pilates class last?
A standard Pilates class usually lasts around 60 minutes, depending on the studio or program. Some classes may be shorter or longer, especially if they focus on specific areas like stretching or deep core work.
Will Pilates make me more flexible?
Pilates can improve flexibility by stretching and lengthening muscles while also strengthening them. It helps increase range of motion and joint mobility, contributing to overall flexibility over time.
I have an existing medical condition or a pre-existing injury, can I still join classes?
Yes, depending on the condition or injury! Pilates is often recommended by doctors for rehabbing specific injuries and is usually an approved form of exercise for lots of medical conditions however it is important to assess on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out before booking.
Do you offer tailored plans or 1-1 sessions?
Yes, Pilates with Gabi offers both 1-1 or 2-1 sessions. These can either be home or studio based, depending on time and location. Please reach out for a friendly chat if this of interest.
Can I cancel / amend my bookings?
There is a no refund policy on all bookings. For any courses, your space on the course is booked for the duration and sessions cannot be swapped / amended once booked.
For sessions that occur weekly, there is a 24hr cancellation policy in place. You may therefore reschedule your class as long as there is more than 24hrs before the start time of your class. Any amendments or cancellations within 24hrs of the class start time will result in your payment/ class pass being lost.
